The crankshaft is the most important part of the engine. It takes the force from the connecting rod and converts it into torque output through the crankshaft and drives other accessories on the engine. The crankshaft receives the centrifugal force of the rotating mass, the periodic inertial force of the gas and the reciprocating inertial force, so that the crankshaft bears a bending torsional load. Therefore, the crankshaft is required to have sufficient strength and rigidity, and the journal surface needs to be wear-resistant, work evenly, and have good balance.

In order to reduce the mass of the crankshaft and the centrifugal force generated during movement, the crankshaft journal is often made hollow. Oil holes are provided on each journal surface to allow oil to be drawn in or out to lubricate the journal surface. In order to reduce the stress concentration, the connection of the main journal, the crank pin and the crank arm adopts a transition arc connection.

The role of the crankshaft counterweight (also known as the counterweight) is to balance the rotating centrifugal force and its torque, and sometimes it can also balance the reciprocating inertial force and its moment. When these forces and moments themselves are balanced, the counterweight can also be used to reduce the load on the main bearing. The number, size, and placement of counterweights should be considered based on factors such as the number of cylinders in the engine, the arrangement of the cylinders, and the shape of the crankshaft. Balancing weight is generally integrated with the casting or forging of the crankshaft. The balance weight of the high-power diesel engine is manufactured separately from the crankshaft and then bolted together.
